Description

This large dark nebula complex, centered on Barnard 78, is located in the constellation of Ophiuchus at a declination of -26 degrees.

Along with Barnard 59, 65, 66 & 67, it is part of the Pipe Nebula complex.  Barnard 78 represents the bowl of the pipe.  The other nebulae represent the stem of the pipe, which is to the right of this image.

The nebula complex is about 650 light years away.  At that distance, the width of this image is about 40 light years.

The density of the star field in this portion of the Milky Way is incredible.
